Kooralbyn Valley Golf Course - Kooralbyn Resort

Australia, Queensland, Gold Coast
4.4 (9)
Designer: Desmond Muirhead
Course Opened: 1979

Situated near Beaudesert, an hour from both Brisbane and the Gold Coast, Kooralbyn was the first course to introduce compulsory cart golf to Australia and one of the pioneering resorts that helped drive the Queensland golf revolution of the 1980’s.

Designed by English architect Desmond Muirhead, the course is unique with holes routed through and across a series of valleys and hills providing plenty of interesting elevation change and attractive rural views. Though full of exciting moments two holes standout, one a par three measuring more than 200 metres and dropping 100 feet from tee to green and the other a double water-carry par four, once described by an American magazine as one of the most difficult 18 holes on earth.

Parts of the Muirhead design have been softened over the years to increase playability for resort guests with some of his more extreme moments dulled down. A constant change of ownership has unfortunately seen course presentation also suffer a dire downturn with fairways and greens no longer up to resort standard and cart paths left virtually derelict.
