Rethmar Golf Links

Germany, North Germany, Hanover
5.5 (2)
Designer: Arnold Palmer, Ed Seay
Course Opened: 1999

Marketed as a traditional links, Rethmar occupies an open field outside of Hannover in Germany and was created by Ed Seay for Arnold Palmer's company. Mostly the ground here was shaped with soft mounding, and greens that are open to the running approach but killing the links feel are the acres of crafted lakes that come into play on at least seven holes. The sprawling bunkering also hurts the authenticity of the links experience, while the location of the site, the surrounding power lines and wind stations and the drabness of the terrain makes for a rather uninspiring golf course.

The routing is also a problem, the 1st green set virtually beside the 2nd green, meaning a good 200 metre walk back to the tee. Other issues exist too, like the severity of the opening hole and the cliched nature of the 9th and 18th, but with decent putting targets and some reasonably challenging holes Rethmar manages to rise above the standard of most other courses in this part of Europe.
