Royal Montreal Golf Club - Blue Course

Canada, Quebec, Montreal
5.8 (5)
Designer: Dick Wilson, Rees Jones
Course Opened: 1959

The Royal Montreal Golf Club was the first official Golf Club in North America, it hosted the first Canadian Open in 1904 as well as eight others and the 2007 President’s Cup where local boy Mike Weir upset Tiger Woods in their singles match.

In Volume 2 of The Confidential Guide to Golf Courses, Tom Doak published that.

“The oldest club in North America was founded in Montreal in 1875, though today’s facility dates from 1959, so a real sense of history only comes through in the upstairs areas of the clubhouse. The championship Blue course was updated by Rees Jones before the Presidents’ Cup in 2007. The routing is only slightly altered, but the curving fairways of Wilson’s design have been formalized into doglegs, and the diagonal ridges in some of the revised greens are very difficult to play over. There are lots of raised greens, so that every recovery shot is a deep bunker shot or a flop with the wedge, until you get to the back nine where water is in play next to five greens.”

The Blue Course at Royal Montreal Golf Club received a score of 6 out of 10 from Tom Doak and scores of 7 out of 10 and 5 out of 10 from two of his co-authors.
