Shaughnessy Golf & Country Club

Canada, Canadian Rockies, British Columbia, Vancouver

Shaughnessy is a famous tournament course in Canada, built on a reasonably flat site near the mouth of the Fraser River. Aside from the opener and two back nine par threes, the holes basically run back and forth here, adjacent the water and with the wind an obvious obstacle. The other obstacles, being narrow fairways, thick rough and super quick, angled greens, are unfortunately what keep this course off the very top tier in Canada. There is a sameness to much of the layout, both from the tee and into the small greens. The par threes standout, perhaps because they aren’t frustratingly narrow and penal. The shortish 16th and attractive 11th are also quite good.

Not hard to see why the PGA Tour loves this venue, the club is terrific and the holes are so relentlessly demanding as to provide a pretty black or white verdict on who hit the ball the best.
