Profile

Wayne Grady is an Australian professional golfer best remembered for his shock 1990 US PGA Championship victory at Shoal Creek.

As his playing career wound down, Grady looked to golf course design as a business opportunity and did well in his early days attracting clients like the Brisbane and Ipswich Golf Club's in his native state of Queensland.

The project at Ipswich Golf Club was sadly hampered by budgetary issues, as well as some site and construction problems. This was an opportunity, however, to essentially design a brand new golf club for the members and the results were disappointing. The placement and size of many of the bunkers seems ill-conceived, as was the use of a natural creek ravine to create forced carries and penal target areas considering the market here. Some of the green sites take a decent picture, but a look down the 4th, 6th, 12th or 13th fairways quickly highlights the shortcomings of Grady's design.

Wayne Grady remains a popular and likeable figure in Australia but one hopes that any future design work will be in partnership with an experienced associate.
