With a premier location in one of Melbourne’s prestigious seaside southern suburbs, Elsternwick was a short, basic 9-hole course that had long been discussed as a potential headquarters for the game in Victoria. The plan from various bodies was to take over the operation of Elsternwick golf course from the local council, reduce the size of its already small course, add practice facilities and an administrative base.

Sadly, the golf course closed permanently in 2018 with no central golf headquarters built or even reduction offered by council. Instead, a golf course that was not losing the council money, that employed people and was enjoyed by a diverse cross section of the local population, is no longer available for golf and will be used as a parkland.
