Port Carling Golf & Country Club

Canada, Ontario, South Ontario, Toronto, Muskoka District

Designer: Doug Carrick
Course Opened: 1993

Sadly we were unable to take a detailed look at Port Carling, but a quick tour 12-13 years ago (2005) suggested more of the same in a Muskoka region full of moderately interesting modern golf courses. The most memorable aspect of the course was the start and a couple of sharply rising par fours that follow a relatively subdued three-shot opener. The 2nd must climb at least 30-feet from the fairway to the green. The 4th is even more severe and feels two or three times as steep from tee through to landing area. Known as the Wall, this longish hole plays straight up and over a hill that had been terraced to prevent short balls rolling all the way back to the tee.

We understand the Wall has been modified and improved since our visit, but walkers are likely still as exhausted standing on the 5th tee as they always were. Thankfully the rest of the course is less extreme, save for a nasty cross canyon par three at the 6th and the violently falling and then rising par five at the 8th.
