The Ness Golf Club was founded on April 4, 1964. The founders of the club were Pétur Björnsson and Ragnar J. Jónsson. The club's first board was made up of chairman Pétur Björnsson, secretary Ragnar Jónsson, Sigurjón Ragnarsson, Ólafur Loftsson and Jón Thorlacius.

The beginning of the Ness Golf Club being founded and people starting to practice golf in Suðurnes, Nesvellin, was that in 1963 the activities of the Reykjavík Golf Club moved from Öskjuhlíð to Grafarholt. The condition of the golf course in Grafarholt in the first few years was quite bad, and several members of GR looked for a practice area. It was Ragnar J. Jónsson's idea to borrow the fields in Suðurnes for golf practice. The Pétur Björnssons had the fields leased from Nesi I, who was a limited company and owned the fields. They enjoyed the fact that Björn Ólafsson, Pétur's father, and Ágúst Fjeldsted, Ragnar's father-in-law, were among the shareholders in Nes I. In the beginning, the golf course was located on half of Suðurnes, the southwest part of it. The fields had been used by horsemen. The ash heaps of Seltjarnarnesbær were located in the westernmost part of Suðurnes, next to the sealing mark that was standing at the time. Where there is now another track, there was a training shelter for the police who practiced shooting there. In the current training area, there were fishing cranes and stables by Daltjörn.

Ness Golf Club was a private club and outside the Reykjavík Sports Association and the Sports Federation of Iceland. The founders were 22 and the majority of members had never played golf. Many of the members were also members of Reykjavík Golf Club. Due to this arrangement that the club was a private club, members of the Ness Golf Club could not participate in a competition organized by the Golf Federation of Iceland (GSÍ). In 1969, at the end of February and March, the Nesklúburinn was founded in order to apply for admission to GSÍ. At the follow-up general meeting on March 15, 1969, the company's final statutes were approved. The first board of the Nesklubb was chaired by Jón Thorlacius, treasurer Ólafur Loftsson and secretary Ólafur Tryggvason. Gradually, the Ness Club took over the operation of the Ness Golf Club. Ness Golf Club – The Ness Club is now one club with one board.

The golf course was initially a nine-hole course par 35 and 2380 m long. It had the first water feature on an Icelandic golf course, i.e. A shop pond and on the same track the first bunker that was built. This bunker still exists on the current eighth fairway. In 1994, the course was expanded with new tracks around Daltjörn. The course is now 9 holes, par 36 and 2646 m long and difficulty level 69.2/125.

In 2003, the fairways of the course were named after the main bird species that honor the Suðunésíð with their presence. The first lane is called Æðukolla, the second Crane, the third Svanur, the fourth Loa, the fifth Stelkur, the sixth Gray Goose, the seventh Margæs, the eighth Stokkönd and the ninth Tjaldur.

Golf World Magazine says:

A revelation. Sits on a peninsula, so you are playing alongside the sea for most holes. It won’t win architectural awards, but is an absolutely unmissable experience.
