South Africa is renowned for its gold, and Crown Mines Golf Course is built in genuine mining country. Situated in the Ormonde Valley just 6 kilometres south west of Johannesburg, the first course was established almost 100 years ago and has since undergone a number of changes.
The present course was constructed on one third of the Crown Mines mining area. In 1970, the club undertook a total rebuild, which was concluded in 1976.
Over the years, the course has matched the challenge at the highest level.
Crown Mines hosted the Minolta Match Play, won by Zimbabwe’s Tony Johnstone, who was honoured with a trophy that was cast to present the looming mineshaft that overlooked the then 18th green.
