Bro-Balsta - Stora Banan

Sweden, Central Sweden, Stockholm
5.2 (5)
Designer: Peter Nordwall
Course Opened: 1982

Situated west of Stockholm, Bro-Balsta is the club where Annika Sorenstam learned to play golf and its main course is a surprisingly attractive layout that occupies rolling countryside thick with pine and birch. The opening holes here are quite interesting, but from the middle of the front nine the track loses its way as the open holes struggle to hold much interest and the hillier ones are spoilt by some silly greens - the moguls on the 9th are crazy. Most of the putting targets are very large and built with tiers, shelves or swales - often the contouring is overdone and lacking subtlety at the expense of sensible golf.

This is a popular club, however, as the facilities are excellent and the turf conditions generally quite good. The 12th hole, modeled on the 16th at Augusta National, is also an attraction for those in Sweden who haven't seen the original.
