From the Border Mail in country Victoria, comes news that a proposal to redevelop an 8-Ha parcel of land at the Wangaratta Golf Club has finally been approved. The club had been seeking planning consent for a 59-home lot subdivision for several years, and council’s decision came after an independent panel had recommended they approve the plans.

For the golf club, the development will facilitate an injection of capital to be spent on updating various facilities including the clubhouse and golf course. No details were provided on any golf course changes, but the housing proposal was described as key to the club’s survival.

Councillor Dean Rees was quoted by the paper as saying, “This is a great thing for the golf club itself to be able to update facilities and go ahead with making the golf club a greater golf club over the next five to 10 years with this exorcision of the land from golf club land.”

Club President Rob Holloway told the newspaper that, ‘We can now move forward with our plans to redevelop the course.’

The club does still require approval from the Victorian State Government, who are not expected to overrule the council approval.

From the Border Mail article:

After four years of objections and false starts, a major residential subdivision at Wangaratta Golf Club has finally been given the tick of approval by the council.

A 7.98-hectare parcel of land will be subdivided to create 59 housing lots called Waldara Golf Estate, accessed off Wangaratta-Yarrawonga Road.

The 12 public submissions to the plan – seven in favour and five against – were referred to an independent panel to make a decision.

The panel’s report, recommending minor changes to boundaries in the subdivision, was unanimously accepted by councillors at Tuesday’s meeting.

It ended a long process for the golf club, which started when the previous council supported the project before it was sacked in 2013, then administrators backflipped on the plans.

Cr Dean Rees said it was important the city take positive actions.

“This development of the golf course has been a long time coming,” he said.

“It’s a change for the Rural City of Wangaratta that’s a good change.

“We are going to offer diversity of land, obviously prices will also be in a new range I imagine and it will be one of the premier subdivisions in Wangaratta.
