According to an article in The Dubrovnik Times, a controversial new Greg Norman golf course project in Croatia is back on the agenda after the developer was granted a new Location Permit. The previous Permit was cancelled following strong protests from an environmental lobby.

The project itself is set on what looks a breathtaking plateau on the Srđ mountain high above the UNESCO world-heritage listed seaside town of Dubrovnik. According to the Golf Park Dubrovnik website, the new development will include an 18-hole ‘signature’ course by Greg Norman Golf Course Design, along with a shorter 9-hole course, a Greg Norman Golf Academy, equestrian club, amphitheatre, two hotels, 240 villas and 408 suites.

The new location licence allows for the construction of the golf courses, irrigation infrastructure and the rebuilding of a road that leads from the town up to the top of the mountain plateau.

Whilst the decision was greeted with satisfaction from the investors several eco-action groups have opposed the news. Green Action from Zagreb and the Dubrovnik based “Srđ je naš” being the most forceful in their protests. “In February 2016 Green Action (Zelene akcije) along with Srđ je naš managed to cancel a location licence for this project. In spite of the previously rejected location permit a new license has been issued for the same project. We will not stop with our critics for this project and will again start a court case against this latest decision,” commented Enes Čerimgić from Green Action.

The Dubrovnik golf project on the Srđ Mountain was first added into the spatial plan in 2001, seventeen years later the golf course is still on hold.
