Media Release:

Former Open Champion and 20-time worldwide winner Henrik Stenson is set to officially open the gates of Österåker by Stenson, the first Henrik Stenson Golf Design (HSGD) project, on 15 September 2019.

Stenson, who launched HSGD in 2015 in partnership with golf course architect Christian Lundin, began designing their first golf course at Österåker Golf Club that same year. Öster by Stenson, which is the first of two 18-hole courses to be be built had a soft opening earlier this month at the Club Championship. The par 72 layout, which is designed as a classical parkland layout with variety of risk and reward elements to entertain the golfer is currently open to members only but will be made accessible for green-fee guests following the opening.

Stenson won’t be at the grand opening alone, Sweden’s first major winner will be joined by the Swedish trio of former PGA Tour winner Richard S Johnson, Ladies European Tour winner Camilla Lennarth, and LPGA player Daniela Holmqvist, who are all set to feature in an 9 hole exhibition match.

Speaking about the announcement, Henrik Stenson, said, “I have always been interested in golf course design and I am grateful to have been lucky enough to be able to put some of my ideas down on paper and then watch them come to life. Working with Christian, we always set out to design a versatile and memorable course, which is playable for both professional and amateur golfers, and I am extremely proud to launch our first Henrik Stenson Golf Design project at Österåker Golf Club. I’m looking forward to see how the golf course is played at the exhibition match against some quality female and male Swedish players.”

Christian Lundin, said, “Working with Henrik over the last four years has been amazing and together we are delighted with how Öster by Stenson has turned out. From the moment we started working on the project we both agreed on a few of the fundamental features that are going to make this golf course and it has been rewarding to see the hard work pay off. We hope the visitors enjoy the course as much as we enjoyed building it.”

Andreas Ljunggren, Club Manager at Österåker Golf Club, said, “It has been fantastic to work with Henrik Stenson Golf Design and we are excited to see what the future holds. We have seen a great response from our members since our soft opening and we are looking forward to being open to the public in the coming weeks. The golf course is in immaculate condition already and we just wish the summer wouldn’t end so we could carry on playing it in the current conditions.”
