Yet another Australian golf club is in the process of redevelopment, with Yowani Country Club in the ACT planning a massive 1,200 home subdivision on land that currently houses its clubhouse and carpark.

According to the Canberra Times, the club’s plan involves the building of a new clubhouse on land next to the golf course currently owned by the ACT government. Should the government refuse to sell the land, the existing clubhouse would be rebuilt and, presumably, downsized to allow for the additional development.

The overall development footprint includes 300 terrace houses of either 2 or 3 storeys, along with a 7-storey apartment complex with around 900 homes.

The development is likely to also include a retail and restaurant component, and potentially a hotel.

The Canberra Times article quotes club Chairman John McCullagh describing the development as a “once-in-a-generation opportunity to redefine the club” and explaining how it needs to diversify income given the fall in gaming revenue and “decline in support for the games of golf and bowls.”

Said Mr McCullagh to the Times, "As you would know, all clubs struggle these days and we have to look at alternatives to generate other sources of income and the only asset we had which was able to do that was the land it sits on."

"We have one of the best golf courses going around at the moment, we want to maintain that, we want to make it better but more importantly we want to have a clubhouse that is financially stable," Mr McCullagh added.
