The Cliffs is a new 18-hole coastal resort golf course on South Australia’s iconic Kangaroo Island, built on 500-million-year-old cliffs that overlook the Southern Ocean.
The course features the rare combination of stunning scenery, abundant wildlife and beautifully formed rolling duneland – perfect for fun, exciting golf holes.
While the holes that run directly along the cliff tops (2, 3, 8, 14 and 15) and the three that run toward the cliffs (1, 7 and 13) will generate the most attention, several away from the coastline are likely to also be among golfers favourites.
Construction of the golf holes was completed in late 2025, with an official opening likely in Spring 2026.
Even before it's built, The Cliffs seems destined to be compared to Cape Wickham in Tasmania, given the designer, the shapers (Lindsay Richter and Glen Peck) and the fact there are few clifftop dune land golf courses in Australia, or elsewhere. Both courses are also built partially on coastal crown land and located on remote islands, though Kangaroo Island is much more accessible than King Island, either via ferry from Cape Jervis or plane from Adelaide airport.
Despite some similarities, in truth Cape Wickham and The Cliffs Kangaroo Island are quite different. Where the coastline on King Island is jagged and irregular, and varies from rocky clifftop to beachside sand dunes, on Kangaroo Island the coastline is more linear and the cliffs more elevated and constantly dramatic.
Importantly, the tops of the cliffs are sandy, and ideal for golf – resembling in some ways the rolling Cups country of the Mornington Peninsula, with its ideal dune corridors and natural golfing valleys.
Kangaroo Island is an iconic tourism destination, that all Australians should visit at least once in their lifetime. Golf developer Sam Atkins and his dedicated team hope to do this incredible island, and this beautiful property, justice with the development of The Cliffs. Their aim is to build a golf course that can act as a standalone attraction, while at the same time encouraging people to spend several days exploring the island.
