Depending on which part of the media release you read, it was announced this week that the Brookwater golf course in southeast Queensland had been redesigned (or restored) by the company originally in change of its creation, Greg Norman Golf Course Design.

Norman, himself a proud Queenslander, describes the opportunity given to his design team at Brookwater as being to ‘modernize’ holes whilst restoring the course ‘to its original form’. He later added that the project was a ‘redesign’, which leaves us curious as to the precise nature of the work undertaken. Clearly putting surfaces were a priority, with the greens having changed shape since opening in 2002. Vegetation management, irrigation and drainage were also focuses of the project.

The following excerpts were taken from the Brookwater Golf Club press release:

Today, the course (Brookwater) has reopened all 18 holes after undergoing a progressive overhaul that included strategic design changes to the greens, fairways and bunkers that promises to improve playability and sustainability.

“We are delighted with what GNGCD has delivered to this already amazing golf course. Brookwater continues to thrill as a championship destination thanks to the incredibly clever design and attention to detail for players.” said Graham Dale, General Manager.

Central to the project’s scope was the resurfacing and restoration of the green complexes in an effort to return them to their original sizes, look, and feel. Fairways have also been widened and a thorough vegetation management program has eradicated overgrown foliage around the course and in waterways, opening playing corridors where encroaching limbs had started to compromise the original design intent. The drainage and irrigation systems were also significantly updated which presents an overall improvement in course conditioning that enhances the playability experience for golfers of all skill levels.

“It’s always great to come back to one of my designs and have the opportunity to modernize it and restore it to its original form, so to be able to return to Brookwater was extremely gratifying” said Greg Norman. “When redesigning a course, our focus is always to improve both the environmental and economic sustainability as well as playability, which we accomplished in spades at Brookwater.”

These enhancements were the first to the acclaimed course since it debuted 15 years ago.
