In honour of the signature design company responsible for its creation, as well as the abundant lakes and ponds, the new par three course at Melbourne’s Eastern Golf Club will be known as Shark Waters when it opens later this year. The 9–hole short loop complements the earlier 27–hole “championship” course also designed by Greg Norman Golf Course Design. Read our review of the full course here.

Ben Telley, the General Manager at Eastern, says of the new arrival that, “we are very excited about the addition of Shark Waters by The Eastern Golf Club to our range of available golfing experiences. It will offer members and guests who have time constraints with a shorter playing option whilst providing an environment that will test even the best golfers.”

According to a recent announcement from the club, the nine Shark Waters holes will all have designated tee markers, but golfers will be allowed to “freeform” and essentially create their own layout by hitting balls from certain tees to different greens. Such flexibility is popular in the United States, where member numbers and course usage is generally much smaller than in Australia. Whether it works as well at Eastern depends on the quality of the holes and the green complexes Norman’s company creates, as well as the appetite of the membership to create their own shots and holes. It certainly is a nice point of difference for the club, and short courses are usually excellent places for members to introduce their children and grandchildren to the game.
