Arthur Hills clearly knows how to build golf courses, but despite a large portfolio he is yet to quite crack the design jackpot. His new courses are a mixed bag, while some of his renovation work was so poorly received that it has been quickly repaired and his changes undone.
The highlight in our experience is Oitavos in Portugal, where Hills and Steve Forrest took advantage of some nice dune land and battled some rather inappropriate housing plots to create an interesting layout that has a number of fine individual holes. As good as the course is, Oitavos was a surprise inclusion on the GOLF Magazine World's Top 100 list in 2009, and on several subsequent ranking lists.
This design team has its strengths, but is clearly not suited to every development. Contact Global Golf Group for advice and further information.
