A fun course that was in excellent condition. The Par 3's are fantastic and can be a real challenge. Having a drink on the course is highly regulated and staff can be fairly rude when monitoring. All in all a great course in wonderful condition.
6Another nice Yarra River course. The fast, true greens are the best of all the Yarra courses and some of the best in Victoria. The hilly terrain and elevation changes make this a challenge to find the right angle to attack pins from. Practice facilites are spread out with two different ranges (one for short irons, one for 4 iron+). The tee boxes really let the place down as they are uneven and not well kept. A fun course with relaxed atmosphere.
The Dunes Golf LinksA wonderful example of links golf and the perfect representation of what the Mornington Peninsula has to offer to the golf world. Set amongst the undulating dunes it is an amazing layout with some great holes. Standing on top of the dunes looking down over the course you can see that very little land needed to be moved to build this course. The Par3 12th green is a perfect example of this with the green tucked between the dunes. The 13th Par5 is beautiful hole with wasteland up the right side framing the fairway. It amazes most visitors that this is a public access course and not private. If visiting the Peninsula this is an absolute must play course. During the summer months the Condition of the greens and course can suffer as it gets hammered by the public and pitch marks and divots can go unrepaired.
Long Reef Golf ClubBeautiful golf property. The course and views speak for themselves. The only course I have played where I needed to wait on a surfer running across the fairway to hit my drive! No frills clubhouse, but this place is really about walking a great course with spectacular views. Worth playing if you are in the area.
Growling Frog Golf CourseThe Frog is a great design and you really get the feeling of playing amongst the native bushland. Once you leave the clubhouse you feel like you are away from the rest of the world. If the deep rough is mowed it is an enjoyable 4.5hr round. If they are not mowed plan on losing 5 balls, finding 10 and taking 6 hours to play. The condition of the course can really be hit or miss. The greens are either great or not worth putting on. Worm casting in the winter can ruin the otherwise plush fairways. The 17th and 18th are fantastic holes and make for a great finish with a well deserved cold one afterwards looking over the course. Always worth playing at the right time.
6With land like the The Cups region it is really hard to build a bad course. The ability to be minimalist and letting the land dictate play certainly stands out here. The fairways are more than generous and the greens are smaller than small! It is a course where you can hit 14 fairways and be lucky to hit 4-6 greens. It is a great challenge and there are spots on the course where you feel like you are in the middle of nowhere. If the original plan to have this as a private share owned course would not have failed I think the condition and playability would be much better. They have struggled with finances from time to time and this shows in some of the surfaces. I would love for some money to be poured into this course as It is truly a fantastic piece of land.
The Kew Golf ClubA nice representation of a Yarra course. The property is always beautifully manicured and the fairways are like carpet. The course itself is not the most interesting and the greens which are often heavily shaded can be less than ideal.
5When the final putt falls on the 18th green and your cheeks ache from smiling so much, you have found heaven. The National is not only the greatest piece of golf real estate in the southern hemisphere, but possibly one of the best in the world. This place was built to appreciate the game, celebrate the architects and give thanks to a wonderful game that we can share with friends and family. I played Long Island, then the Moonah and then Gunnamatta. I could not imagine that the course waiting behind the clubhouse could be any better or any more awe inspiring. Gunnamatta is a blast to play, so much fun and a perfect representation of the best Australia has to offer. Doak hit a home run at Gunnamatta! The Moonah course is testing, tough and amazing. You shoot a good round on the Moonah and your game is where it should be and you yearn to come back again. We left the Old course to last. It happened to be on a clear winters day with minimal wind. From the first tee looking down the fairway with a lone Moonah tree to the right you know you are in for something special. But then you look to your right and see Bass Straight and wonder if it could get any better. After every hole the smile gets bigger and you don't want it to end. Each hole is a lone challenge and you feel you are on the course by yourself. The course challenges you, it excites, inspires and impresses. It makes you crave more golf experiences although few may be as special. As you get to the 17th tee after having amazing ocean views all day you get a window of what is below...two more amazing courses and views that will hopefully burn into your soul. The National is truly inspiring and the Old Course should be recognised as one of the finest courses in the world. Having played all of the Sandbelt courses several times, nothing excites me as much as driving down Cups Drive for a round on the Old Course. When I die spread my ashes across this masterpiece.
The National Golf Club - Gunnamatta Course (formerly Ocean Course)FUN! FUN! FUN! If you can't enjoy a round on the Gunnamatta it's time for lawn bowls. This course is an absolute delight. Standing on the Par 5 first tee you must make a decision, right fairway, left fairway or aim at the bunker and hope. The green complex is a bowl that really excites the soul. This hole for most mid and low handicappers is an easy par and should give most a good look at birdie. The Par 4 2nd is on of my favourites. With a large bunker on the left cutting off a direct path to the green the choice is layup short or challenge the right side which has bunkers, rough and if you land at the wrong spot the slope of the fairway will carry the ball into the left side bunker. The green as another massive bowl that has an OB fence to the back. The short Par4 3rd has another bowl green and its at this stage you know that Doak designed play here to be joyful, creative and inventive. When standing on a few tees you get a great view of Bass Straight and can see up to 11 different flags. It truly is a wonderful piece of land. This course is always engaging and makes you want more. An absolute must play for any golfer of any level. The finishing holes are fantastic and finishing below the amazing clubhouse makes you realise you are somewhere very special...you are at The National.
