The 2024 Australian Golf Digest Top 100 Golf Courses ranking was published in the May issue of the magazine, and features Cape Wickham (King Island, Tasmania) as the new No. 1 ranked course in Australia. The only other Australian Golf Digest ranking not headed by Royal Melbourne was in 2010, when the club was in the midst of a drought / water crisis and Kingston Heath took top honours.

As co-designer of Cape Wickham, and a life-long lover of Royal Melbourne West, I am somewhat conflicted by these results. Although clearly great recognition for the quality of the golf holes at Cape Wickham, one hopes they don’t suggest to the current Vietnamese owners, or any future owner, that additional investment in the facility is unnecessary. Royal Melbourne West has little room for enhancement, whereas there are clear areas of potential improvement at Cape Wickham, with the right advice.
